The Portuguese-Speaking Community in Australia Arrival and Settlement There is strong evidence to suggest the Portuguese explored the Australian coast more than 200 years before Captain Cook's voyage of 1770. By the time Cook landed in Australia, the Portuguese had been running their colony of Timor, just 475 kilometres from the Australian coast, for 250 years. Maps, thought to have been drawn by Portuguese seafarers and dating from the mid-1500s, clearly show the outline of the Australian continent and old cannons bearing Portuguese markings have been found near Broome, in Western Australia and Warrnambool in Victoria. Tantalising speculation continues about early Portuguese contact with the Australian continent. Some of the earliest Portuguese migrants began to arrive around 1824. Australia's Portuguese-speaking community is estimated to number around 65,000 and comes principally from seven countries: the five African nations which have Portuguese as their official language known as the PALOP group, Portugal itself, Brazil, Timor-Leste and France. The PALOP group includes Angola, Mozambique, Guinea-Bissau, the Cape Verde group of islands and the island nation of Saint Tome and Prince. A significant proportion of the community is from East Timor and many Portuguese-speakers are Australian-born. By far, most of Australia's Portuguese-speakers live in Sydney. The Australian Portuguese-speaking community is young compared with other migrant groups. Recent statistics show most are under 40. Migrants from rural Portugal began arriving in Australia in the 1940s and 1950s and turned to jobs in industry when they came to Australia. Other, more recent migrant groups were made up of refugees, many from East Timor, who arrived after 1975 and people from Brazil who left their country in the 1980s. In Sydney, the community is concentrated in the inner south west around the suburb of Petersham. Although relatively small, the community's commercial and cultural influence has flourished as the area has been reclaimed from its industrial past. Other Portuguese-speaking communities are widespread throughout the country. A large group of Portuguese from Madeira settled in Fremantle, Western Australia, in the 1950s. Migrants from Portugal and Brazil are allowed dual citizenship and so they retain strong ties to their homeland.
