The Laotian Community in Australia Arrival and Settlement The Laotian community in Australia grew from a small group of migrants which arrived in the late 1970s. Numbering around 500, they arrived in March 1976 after fleeing the Indo-Chinese conflict, which subsequently resulted in the takeover by Communist forces in Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos. The group included ethnic Chinese, ethnic Vietnamese, ethnic Cambodian, Tai Dam, Khmu and Hmong. Most of the subsequent arrivals from Laos came to Australia under the Family Reunion program. There was also a small number of Laotians who stayed on in Australia after studying here under the Colombo Plan and other aid programs. The Lao population in Australia is now estimated at around 13,000 with most living in Sydney and Melbourne. The majority of Laotians are Therevada Buddhist but there is also a small percentage of Catholics within the community. The community has traditionally suffered from high levels of unemployment and language barriers.
