The Japanese-Speaking Community in Australia

Arrival and Settlement

The first Japanese to visit Australia arrived in 1867. A twelve-man acrobatic group called the "Great Dragon Troupe" performed in Melbourne. During 1874 another troupe performed in Melbourne. One of the acrobats, Sakuragawa Rikinosuke, married an Australian woman in 1875 and they moved to Queensland. Their descendants still live in that state.

The peak years of Japanese migration to Australia were between 1893 and 1898.

In 1901 there were 3,554 Japanese speaking people in Australia. The majority of these were engaged in the sugar and pearling industries in Queensland or pearling in Western Australia.

For the next fifty years the only Japanese admitted to Australia were crews and divers indentured to Australian pearlers. A handful of merchants, tourists and students had temporary entry permits.

In 1908, the Japanese became the largest national group employed in the pearling industry in Broome. In 1914, when pearling reached its peak, there were 1,166 Japanese in Broome and 574 on Thursday Island.

By 1911 there were 357 Japanese men employed in the Queensland sugar industry.

At the end of the Second World War only around 74 Japanese nationals and about 80 Australian born Japanese were permitted to remain in Australia. The others were deported to Japan. In 1952 the first of approximately 800 Japanese "War Brides" began to enter Australia.

Despite a huge influx of Japanese tourists the number of permanent residents has remained small. These are mostly business people, academics and spouses of Australians. There are also a large number of students and young people on working holidays staying for a year or less. At the 1996 census there were about 10,000 permanent Japanese residents in Australia and almost the same number on temporary visas.
