The Italian Community in Australia Italians are the largest non-Anglo-Saxon migrant group in Australia, and Italian is the second most spoken language in the country. About half a million people still speak Italian at home. It's believed the first Italians to see the Australian continent were sailors Giacomo Matra and Antonio Ponto, who were on board the Endeavour with Captain James Cook during his voyage of discovery in 1770. Arrival The majority of migrants came from Italy after the Second World War, but the first to settle in Australia, Sicilian Giuseppe Tusa, was a convict with the First Fleet in 1788. After serving his sentence, he lived in Sydney, married and had four children. Italians from all walks of life made their way to Australia. Among them was a Giuseppe Basesto, pharmacist, inventor and eventually a member of Parliament. There was also Count Leopoldo De Salis who became a big landowner and magistrate. Settlement What had been a flood of Italian migrants, today has slowed to a trickle. Italian-Australians are well established in all walks of life and have made a significant contribution to the development of Australia's, food, wine and tourism industries. Australia's highest building was built by a company founded and still owned by a Veneto family and a company, started by a former Italian prisoner of war, is responsible for the construction of Sydney's Harbour Tunnel. In Australia, Italians have prospered. They're active in Politics, Sport, Journalism, the Law, and the Arts. They've passed on the best of their heritage and culture for the enjoyment of all Australians.
