A brief history The idea of multicultural broadcasting emerged in 1975, when experimental ethnic radio stations 2EA and 3EA commenced with seven language programs, including Turkish. This proved to be a great success and the then 2EA in Sydney and 3EA in Melbourne had their lives extended for three years. On January 1, 1978, SBS was established to manage the two radio stations. During the broadcaster’s extensive history, the Turkish language program has also come a long way. The Turkish language program has conducted significant interviews with political commentators both in Turkey and other countries. It has also had the opportunity to interview and put to air Turkish politicians, artists, journalists, athletes and academics during their respective visits to Australia. In 1990, the Turkish language program established the youth program in Melbourne, and subsequently in Sydney, where young broadcasters would have the opportunity to reach out to listeners in a talkback format. The program continues to be an enormous success, and has laid the framework for the establishment of other youth programs in different languages, including Alchemy; the youth, arts, culture and music program in English. It has also provided the opportunity for inspiring young journalists to work in a professional media organisation. The SBS Radio Turkish language program is an integral part of the Turkish-speaking community. The program would like to recognise the following people for their efforts in making it so: Sema Varova, Ertuğrul İncekara, Gülçin İncekara, Ayşe Kemikoğlu, Yalçın Ener, Cem Fikirkoca, Aynur Çağlı (Açan), Bora Kanra, Nilgün Olcayöz and Aynur Deniz, who have all worked for SBS over various periods. The Turkish language program currently has a team of experienced journalists who continue to provide excellent coverage of, and relevant to, Turkish-speaking communities across Australia. The executive producer of the Turkish language program is Bülent İbrişim. The other producers and presenters of the Turkish team include: Tanju Yenisey, Feriha Güney, Özen Özüner, İsmail Kayhan, Evrim Günçe and Erdem Koç. |
