Broadcasting since 1975 and building on 34 years of experience in radio journalism, the program continues to break new ground on sensitive and diverse issues affecting Australia's Arabic-speaking community, integral to the settlement process and harmony. It has a reputation for breaking news and providing live coverage of major developments in Australia and the Middle East. It provides reliable news, information and quality programming, as an Australian media outlet in Arabic. Arabic is the second most commonly spoken language other than English in Sydney and remains in the top five languages other than English, spoken in Australia as a whole. SBS Radio's Arabic Language program broadcasters have won several international and national awards for broadcast journalism and creative excellence. In 2002, the program received the first Walkley ever to be awarded in Australia to a journalistic work in a language other than English. The Walkley was awarded in the Radio Feature, Documentary or Broadcast Special category. The first prestigious Award: In 1988, the Australasian Academy of Broadcast Arts and Sciences recognised the program with a Pater award for the Best Special Talk documentary. The program received also an award for Best Fund Raising program. The Arabic program has won two youth media awards: the 1997 New South Wales Premier's Youth Media Award and the 1994 Philips Electronics Award. It has also received several awards from Community organisations and FECCA for pioneering and distinguished programming. SBS Radio's Arabic Program broadcasts for newly-arrived settlers; 'Welcome to Australia' is heard on Saturday mornings and a settlement special to assist migrants and refugees settle in their new homeland, features every Thursday at 7.00pm. The special includes interviews with new arrivals and service providers, information for new migrants regarding health, youth and other settlement issues. It also aims to educate listeners about Australian values, its culture and rich history. Monday 7-8 am: There's an up-to-date interview with our correspondent in Iraq, Ashraf Al Izzawi, and current affairs and settlement issues with a particular focus on Sydney and Melbourne. 7-8 pm: The program presents Adwaa Sydney matters with interviews information and settlement matters, followed by community noticeboard and what's on in Sydney. Tuesday 7-8 am a round-up from our correspondent in Lebanon followed by comprehensive current affairs and analysis of the issues affecting the Arabic Community. Interviews includes decision makers, plitical figures and personalities from Australia, the Middle East and places where the news is. Listeners from around Australia are invited to express their opinions in the Arabic Community Talks Back. 7-8 pm tune in to hear an interview with the USA correspondent Mohamad Al Alami providing an insight on the policies and opinions as they effect the world, and The Health Program featuring coverage of latest medical issues for a healthy lifestyle featuring specialists with expert views on healthy living. Wednesday 7-8 am interview with our correspondent in Cairo, Mohamad El Shazili , and Current affairs issues of particular interest on the Arabic community in Melbourne. 7-8 pm covering settlement issues of particular interest to the Arabic community in Sydney and other Australian issues. Thursday 7-8 am , tune in for an interview with our correspondent from Syria Muwafak Mohamad followed by a Youth Issues special Shabab Wa Mustaqbal, Youth speak out and parents listen. 7-8 pm listen to the Settlement Special with a particular focus on new arrivals, information about Australia, Obligations in the new country, refugees and news settlers. The program also includes the latest from Jordan with the program's correspondent Sleiman Kheiralla. Friday 7-8 am the correspondent from Jerusalem Hassan Jaafar follows the news then Family World.explores challenging issues facing the Australian Arabic family in Australia, including talk back. 7-8 pm it's Australian current affairs analysis and background special documentary in Horizons and there's a round-up of community news bulletin and events for the week end. Saturday 7-8 am In Profile, an in-depth interview with a special guest focusing on migration, citizenship, identity and settlement, This program collates oral history of the Arabic community in Australia. The interviews are archived. followed by Welcome to Australia featuring Australian history, poets, literary personalities and names that made a difference in Australia. Saturday 7-8 pm A focus on cultural and settlement issues with a particular focus on States other than Sydney and Melbourne. Sunday 7-8 am , listen to our special highlighting Australian issues and special features providing a background to main issues of the week, a focus on the political, economic, sport and social inclusion matters in Australia. 7-8 pm Settlement issues and current affairs with a particular focus on Melbourne and community notice board from Melbourne.
