Iryna Dvoskina - between Ukraine and Australia: 18.2.2009
As the world's top able-bodied athletes prepare for the Beijing Olympics in August, those with a range of disabilities are training hard for the 13th Paralympic Summer Games. The Paralympics will be held from the 6th to the 17th September, 12 days after the close of the Olympic Games and using the same facilities. Most of the events will take place in Beijing, with equestrian and sailing events to be held in Hong Kong and Qingdao. The Chief Executive of the Australian Paralympic Committee, Mr Darren Peters says this year will see Australia’s largest team ever, with 170 athletes competing in 13 sports. The Australian Paralympic athletics team is fortunate to have Iryna Dvoskina as a coach; her years of experience making her one of the best athletics coaches in the world. Originally she is from Ukraine. Iryna Dvoskina moved to Australia in 2003 to become the athletics coach of the Australian Institute of Sport. It is a position she is very proud to hold and believes that with hard work and determination, her athletes will achieve their goals. Iryna is a strict coach, who is focused on getting the best from her athletes. She believes the “the best victory is the victory you have over yourself” and asks he athletes to adhere to this advice. Her career has thrown her constant challenges. After the break up of the USSR, Iryna was daringly one of the first head coaches of the newly created Ukraine team. It was a decision Iryna describes as one of the scariest choices she has ever had to make. But with the support of her husband Yuriy and daughter Anastasia, she was able to support her Ukraine team in both the 1996 and 2000 Paralympics. Since moving to Australia she has brought success to our 2004 Paralympic team and is looking to do it again in 2008. Serhij Serbin produced this segment.
