Taras Kurchyk Visits The Ukrainina Cenior Citizens Club in Perth: 18.2.2009
Bohdan Mykytiuk talks about, how the usual Ukrainian Senior Citizens Club weekly meeting was transformed into a very special event, being entertained by a special guest from Ukraine – the singer, Taras Kurchyk. Upon their arrival with Fr Kalinecki they were greeted by a hearty applause and Mr. Moroz warmly welcomed and introduced Taras as well as his manager, Roman Kitner. Taras, from Drohobycz, Western Ukraine, gave a short account of his professional life interspersed with songs. He has performed in Europe and Canada, and very soon will be heading to the USA where, incidentally, proceeds from the sales of his CDs will go to the construction of the new Greek Catholic Cathedral in Kyiv. He was invited by Bishop Stasiuk to come to Australia for World Youth Day. Although he is a Ukrainian pop music (“estradna musyka”) artist, singing modernized adaptations of traditional Ukrainian songs as well as writing his own popular songs, he emphasized the personal importance of writing and performing sacred songs - “dukhovni pisni” – to encourage young people especially to nurture the spiritual aspects of life, not just the material. It should be mentioned that in 2001 he entered a nation-wide competition at the last moment, competing against prominent Ukrainian composers, poets and writers – and won, with his song titled “Bozha Laska ” (“God’s Grace”) that became the spiritual anthem during the first visit to Ukraine by Pope John Paul II. Taras gave the Pope a copy of the CD for which he received the Pope’s apostolic blessing. Taras loves working with young people, so it is not surprising that he leads the jury of Ukraine’s “Song of the Heart” festival for children and youth – and for which he wrote the theme song. After a brief initiation, he had everyone at the Club energetically singing the chorus. As an artist he has a passion for promoting the popularity of Ukrainian songs from which, he feels, emanates the energy of the Ukrainian soil, Taras also makes a point of recognizing through song the invaluable contribution of all generations who have fought for Ukraine’s freedom and her development so that now the young ones can be born and live in a free Ukraine. The pensioners enjoyed every moment of the performance, which finished with everyone singing the most beloved of Ukrainian songs “Ridna Maty Moja” (Dear Mother of Mine), together.
