Mayor of Wudinna Tim Scholz: 15.10.2009
The "Australian Farmer" granite sculpture at Wudinna is a finalist in the 2009 Ruby Awards.
These awards are considered to be the top-level art awards in South Australia, according to Tim Scholz, the Mayor of Wudinna.
The granite sculpture is in the category of "Community Projects over $100,000" and Mayor Scholz says that it is up against some very tough competition in that category, including the Adelaide Fringe Festival.
He says that it is just fantastic recognition to make it into the finals.
Since opening in April, Mayor Scholz says that on any day there will be a number of vehicles stopping and taking photos. He says visitor numbers have probably tripled with people who have stopped to look at the sculpture.
The sculpture is carved out of local granite by artist Marijan Bekic and his son David, and stands at about 8 metres in height.
