BALIBO WAR CRIMES: 11.9.2009
A war crimes investigation has been launched into the deaths of the so-called BALIBO Five in EAST TIMOR more than 30 years ago. Television journalists GREG SHACKLETON and MALCOLM RENNIE, cameramen GARY CUNNINGHAM and BRIAN PETERS, and sound recordist TONY STEWART died in 1975. They were killed in the town of BALIBO while trying to capture images of Indonesian troops as they invaded the former Portuguese colony. Sergei Serbin report

CHILD ABUSE: 7.9.2009
A survey has found that about a quarter of all Australian adults have identified a case of suspected child abuse and neglect in the past five years. Almost half of these people went on to report the incident to child protection authorities or police, though many took no action. MILITARY JUSTICE: 30.8.2009
AUSTRALIA's system of military justice is in limbo and uncertainty surrounds more than 170 judgements handed down by the Australian Military Court (AMC) after the High Court ruled the body unconstitutional. The ruling means that all cases heard by the Australian Military Court are now, in effect, illegal and may have to be re-tried. WOMEN EMPLOYMENT: 27.8.2009
Working women face high levels of under-employment, chronic low pay and new research shows the global recession is making it worse. A study from the Australia Institute shows the financial downturn has exacerbated issues of pay inequality and under-employment, with women comprising 80 per cent of what's called the 'hidden unemployed'. This means instead of being officially defined as unemployed, women move directly from being employed, to leaving the labour market entirely when they have children. Sergei Serbin report.

AUSTRALIA has signed its largest ever trade deal, worth 50 billion dollars. It's to provide CHINA with more than two-million tonnes of liquified natural gas (LNG) a year for 20 years, from the yet to be developed GORGON project in WESTERN AUSTRALIA.The federal government says the deal could generate around six thousand jobs, and the income will go to funding schools, hospitals, roads and infrastructure across AUSTRALIA for decades.
