Im Gespräch – Lebensgeschichte Holger Scholz 1: 15.10.2009
In „Im Gespräch mit Trudi Latour" you’ll hear the start of a new series of “Lebensgeschichten”, life stories of older German-Australians. My conversational partner today is Holger Scholz, who saw the bombing of Dresden as a 4 year old, fled the GDR in 1961 and has been living in Australia, PNG and Indonesia since 1962. This is the first part of his adventurous life story which takes us up to his first unsuccessful attempt to flee the GDR and his agreement to work for the Stasi in order not to be sent to a prison which he might never leave alive.

We spoke to two experts, with two opinions: Energy expert Sven Teske, and Thomas Lautsch, spokesman for “Clean Coal” technology with European energy giant Vattenfall. Interviews: Oliver Heuthe. Host: Christian Froelicher. Photo: Thomas Lautsch

Energy efficiency - chic or affordable?: 17.9.2009
Energy efficiency is a buzz word – experts love it, politicians use it, some industries fear it, while others build their future on the concept. (Some) German industries are among the leading developers of energy efficient technologies. But are these technologies finding customers? Oliver Heuthe spoke to industry expert Jan Benjamin Spitzley about efficiency, the economic crisis and the future. Spitzley works for the German company Eclareon GmbH, and is responsible for the promotion of German technology exports.

Kulturschmelze Wagenhallen: 7.10.2009
The „Wagenhallen“ in Stuttgart, Germany – that’s the name of a large and experimental cultural project in Germany. Some have described it as microcosm like Berlin, in small, in Swabia. Pamela Rauleder was there and spoke to initiators, organisers and artists in this cultural hotpot.

Energy efficient building: 17.9.2009
The idea has long been turned into a number of legal standards in Europe – but in Australia, energy efficient building is only just getting onto the agenda. A recent conference in Melbourne aimed to continue that process. One of the guests was the German government’s commissioner for energy and energy efficiency in the building industry, Dr. Olaf Boettcher. Surveying the state of Australian building and insulation standards, Boettcher finds what experts describe as “shed climate” in a majority of living quarters. Oliver Heuthe spoke to Boettcher about materials of the future, micro climate, and whether the German legislative is acting as decisively as it should on the issue, itself.

Passive houses: 17.9.2009
One of the most promising concepts in energy efficient building is the so called “passive house” – a house that cools and warms itself sufficiently without requiring any significant energy input. Oliver Heuthe spoke to one of the pioneers of the concept, German architect Ludwig Rongen from the University of Erfurt.

Die Fantastischen Vier - German Hip Hop has grown up: 7.9.2009
Just 20 years ago, Rap was still mostly an underground phenomenon in Germany. Then all of a sudden, four fellows from southern Germany entered the lime light. They called themselves ‘Die Fantastischen Vier’ – and with them they brought a new brand of Hip Hop that would grow into one of the strongest musical phenomena in recent German history. Just a little while ago, they celebrated an incredible 20th anniversary – with a massive party in their home town Stuttgart. We were there.

A highway to Rock'n'Roll haven - Fremantle, WA: 15.9.2009
Fremantle in Western Australia is cementing it’s claim to be Australia’s Hard Rock capital. Former AC/DC front man Bon Scott spent most of his life in the town south of Perth and was laid to rest there almost thirty years ago. There is a statue and plenty of other locations closely linked to him. A local tourism agency recently jumped on the band wagon and is now providing a ‘Highway to Hell’ tour around town. Sebastian Schöner asked tour guide Harry Arnold, how the idea came about.

On the GDR - Hubertus Knabe - part 1: 21.8.2009
The legacy of the former Stasi, the former GDR’s main inner security organ, continues to incite debates in Germany. These discussions are proof that, 20 years after the wall came down, there are still not many generally accepted answers – to questions such as: How should German society deal with the thousands of Stasi-operatives? Is it always necessary to continually bring up the past, or would it be better to just let society move on? Hubertus Knabe is a historian, Stasi-expert and the Academic Director of the Museum Berlin-Hohenschoenhausen – a former Stasi prison. Oliver Heuthe spoke to Hubertus Knabe in Melbourne.

Would it be fair to label the GDR as a totalitarian Regime? Would that put the GDR on a similar level as the Third Reich? Hubertus Knabe is an expert on the Stasi. He spent the early part of his life in the GDR, today he is a renowned historian, and the Academic Director of the Memorial Berlin-Hohenschönhausen, a museum in the premises of a former Stasi prison. How to evaluate the severity of the GDR regime – that’s one of the questions Oliver Heuthe put to Knabe, in the second part of the interview.
