Germany revisited - Saxony
Saxony is often referred to as the former GDR’s “heartland”. 4.2 million people live in this most eastern of all 16 German states. It’s the home of famous composers and authors, architects and engineers, with Dresden as its capital. Other important cities are Leipzig, Chemnitz and Zwickau, home of the infamous Trabant, the GDR’s version of the FRG’s VW Beetle. And no visit to Saxony would be complete without a visit to the Frauenkirche, a Baroque masterpiece magnifically restored, 60 years after its collapse following the Allied bombing of Dresden in 1945. Oliver Heuthe has more.
