SBS Radio’s Mandarin program series ‘Knowing Australia – Arts & Sports’ concludes at the end of March, the third in a series that together total more than 70 episodes, covering the people and events that have shaped Australia’s history; arts scene and sporting culture.
In response to audience requests after the Howard Federal Government unveiled plans to introduce a citizenship test based on Australian history and values, the first radio series Knowing Australia – History began in 2007, airing on SBS Radio’s Sunday evening Mandarin program.
The popular master piece radio series, expanded into 16 episodes of History, 24 episodes of Arts and 20 episodes of Sports, as well as 10 special Olympic episodes during the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
The associated competition for Knowing Australia - History in 2007 attracted a great deal of attention in the Chinese community and received dozens of entries, attracting many new listeners to the SBS Mandarin program.
Chinese community organizations utilised the series by holding seminars using the Knowing Australia program material to teach to Chinese Australian citizen hopefuls.
Knowing Australia plays positive role in helping the Australian Chinese community to understand Australia’s lifestyle, culture, values and history and to help people integrate themselves into our multicultural society.
