SBS Radio uncovers hoax designed to embarass Brazilian President Lula
The executive producer of SBS Radio Portuguese Language Program, Beatriz Wagner, and the program' sports stringer in Brazil, Luciano Borges, uncover a hoax and report the existence of a "Lula impersonator" to the Brazilian government.
After recording the interview with the fake president Lula da Silva, Beatriz became more suspicious with the tone and content of the talk. She contacted the Consul-General of Brazil in Sydney, Kywal de Oliveira, who found the president's declarations unusual.
Beatriz asked Luciano Borges for help with the investigation. It was overnight in Brazil and authorities couldn't be contacted. Luciano discovered that the hoax came probably from the Chupim program, by local São Paulo Metropolitana FM radio, in Brazil.
The interview, scheduled to be on air on Saturday, was cancelled.
SBS Radio's Beatriz Wagner officially reported the hoax to Franklin Martins, the Brazilian Presidency Secretary for Social Communication, who passed the report to the GSI - the Presidency Institutional Security Cabinet, for "investigation and appropriate course of action".
Nelson Breve, the Brazilian President's Press Secretary, wrote to SBS Radio's Beatriz saying that after SBS Radio stringer's investigation, apparently this is a prank by a Sao Paulo's radio comedy show, "which does not relieve the author's responsibility of the offense of false identity".
Nélson Breve adds "we regret what happened and hope the issue will have a satisfactory resolution".
