In the 18th Century Rome opera was banned, therefore, one of the features of Christmas celebrations in baroque Rome was the performance of a cantata on Christmas Eve in the Palazzo Apostolico.
One of the quirks of all these Roman Christmas cantatas is that they rarely retell the story of the nativity as we have it in the Gospels. Instead, there are moral musings on the legacy of the Holy Birth from a plethora of allegorical figures such as Pace (Peace), Fede (Faith), Giustizia (Justice), Innocenza (Innocence). Even the elements: Aria (air), Acqua (water), Fuoco (fire), Terra (earth) and the seasons: Primavera (spring), are personified to make their comments. The libretto of Vaticini di Pace is typical both with regard to its characters and the nature of their dialogue.
